VMs are horrible for anything outside running office programs. I can't tell you enough of NVIDIA's crappy linux drivers, for example.
Using Linux as a host OS for running VMs would make this worse PURELY by woeful GPU drivers. In turn, graphics performance in a VM is gimped, regardless of what specs you have. What they emulate is often really crappy too, not often having more than basic/limited 3D acceleration. a particular GPU, mainly due to not being able to natively use the main GPU. The other issue is that VMs often emulate specific hardware configurations, ie. Having a higher specced computer can mitigate this somewhat along with a CPU that has virtualisation features built in, but it'll creep up regardless. This is made worse if you use more intensive programs on a virtual machine. The issue is that the main OS takes priority, meaning you will still get some stutter or slow down. At full speed however is a different matter. When running games, how much higher do your actual system specs have to be, over the stated minimum requirements for the game, to run it at full speed? I assume that VirtualBox is 100% compatible with all software written for the virtual OS that you're using? In other words, if you're running virtual WinXP, it runs everything that runs on a real XP system, right? Including games?
